When you are studying for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) section 608 tests you will need study materials. The tests however are short, reasonably straightforward and usually lead on to more in depth HVAC training. Which books then do you really need for the tests and will they be useful once you have passed?

EPA section 608

Books aimed specifically at passing the EPA tests are usually very limited in scope and may not be very useful or relevant to you once you have passed the tests. Typically the material in the book does not have enough depth to enable a student to fully understand a topic but is sufficient for simple rote learning to pass the test. If you are under time pressure to pass a test or are a complete beginner they may be worthwhile to you. Some of the books available are very inexpensive and you may decide they are worthwhile because of this. If you are studying on a two or more year course you can always sell the book on to one of the incoming students on your course once you have passed the test.

In recent years the EPA have made a number of changes to the test questions by introducing new topics following changes in the section 608 law. This means that books published more than a couple of years ago may not contain sufficient up to date material to pass the test. If the book you choose does not cover the most recent changes you will need to supplement your reading material. Some recent topics you need to cover are:

  • Record keeping requirements
  • Refrigerant purchasing restrictions
  • New leak rate thresholds
  • Annual leak inspection requirements
  • Leak reporting requirements

If you do buy an older book or a second hand copy make sure you have studied any missing topics using one of the many online section 608 resources or a more general textbook.

Technician Certification for Refrigerants, 3rd edition

Author Howard Styles

Many EPA section 608 course books simply concentrate on the goal of passing the tests and do not provide any more information than is required for the test. Once a student has passed then they are going to have to learn the EPA course material in more detail if they want to actually become a technician. Typically the student discards any section 608 training materials once they have their EPA card. This book is intended to cover the EPA tests in considerably more detail, teaching the student the underlying concepts of HVAC and leaving the student with both a greater level of knowledge as well as a high test score. This book is highly recommended and will continue to be useful following the tests.

Fundamental Refrigeration, 1st edition

Author George Gunter

Fundamental refrigeration is intended to be an initial introduction to students who are not familiar with HVAC systems. The text keeps theory and mathematics to a minimum for easy access to the basic refrigeration concepts but covers much of the information EPA section 608 students must learn. Although the book does not cover the full scope of the EPA tests it is useful as an introduction to HVAC topics. In the book R-22 refrigerant in high pressure systems is used for the examples which should be useful for all of the tests. As the book is now over a decade old the price for a new copy on Amazon is now reasonable which is why we are recommending it.
